Goodreads SynopsisHer name’s Moxie. Moxie McCoy.

Bold, opinionated, and haplessly self-confident, the world’s greatest fourth-grade detective faces her biggest challenge! When someone kidnaps beloved school mascot Eddie the Owl, Moxie is on the case–but she’s forced to fly solo now that her best friend (and crime-solving partner) has moved away.

Moxie must interview her classmates–both as potential new best friends and as possible suspects. She finds clues and points fingers but can’t save the owl on her own. Enter Moxie’s little brother, Milton. Quiet, cautious, and boring as a butter knife, he’s a good listener.

Can the Real McCoys form an unlikely alliance and solve the crime of the century?

The first thing that caught my attention with this read was the cover, and I know I shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but it was absolutely worth doing so. Once I received my copy and looked inside, I knew I was going to really enjoy getting into the story, and my kids were not far behind. The illustrations made it even more of an engaging read, which my kids loved the most. I couldn’t get enough of the cuteness involved.

“Having a best friend who doesn’t like avocados would be like having a dentist who doesn’t like washing his hands before sticking them in your mouth.”

“Mom is an entomologist who travels all over the world. Right now she is in the Amazon rain forest discovering new kinds of insects in the tallest trees. She is probably a spry. And possibly a samurai. But this is CLASSIFIED information.”

The main character is Moxie McCoy and she definitely has tons of Moxie! She’s all heart, always talking about the cases she’s solved whether it be with her best friend Maude, or on her own. There’s much to love about her character and the kids will want to read more of her adventures as they get absorbed into the novel. And they will, because Moxie has a great imagination that completely helps the mysteries get solved.

“And what she means is that the world is so strange and confusing and unpredictable that you can never be 100% certain about anything, but that you must always do your very best to get close to the truth as you can. Which is what I always try to do at every moment.”

There is something always going on in The Real McCoys and it doesn’t leave the reader without enough “cases” to read about. The illustrations keep it from feeling a little too daunting, with well placed chapter breaks. It’s one that will be with my kids for a long time and hopefully give them an even bigger love for reading. I doubt they’ll have any issues with that if theree continues to be more books like this being released.

***I received this copy from Imprint in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.***

ROBBI BEHR is an illustrator/print maker/commercial salmon fisherwoman who earned a BA from Williams College and an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design. When she is not drawing stuff or eating ice cream or watching sappy late-90s chick movies, she is, in all likelihood, fast asleep.

MATTHEW SWANSON is a writer/art director/blues harmonica player who has so far failed in every attempt to be swashbuckling. He managed to secure a BA from Williams but was summarily rejected from every MFA program to which he applied—thus emboldening Robbi to remind him almost daily that he is a master of nothing.

Covers always make me either want to open the book or leave it on the shelf. This one does have a fun cover and sounds like it also has my favorite kind of spunky characters.
