1) When it came to writing Awaken, you’ve shared that reading other books helped a great deal with how you approached your novel. Which books would you say inspired you the most during that time?
I love the writing style of Michael Crichton. His book Jurassic Park got me thinking about genetics and that’s where the base premise of my story came from. What are humans capable of when it comes to genetic modification? He used it to fabricate dinosaurs. I wanted to see what lengths people would go to in order to modify themselves.
2) Along with reading, you also kept notebooks to jot down ideas, plot changes, and character developments. Are there any other methods that aided in your writing process?
When I write, I make sure I’m alone — away from my husband and cats 😊- with my note books, my laptop and my headphones/playlist. I like having music on in the background because I don’t want total silence just controlled noise. I sometimes take a break and check instagram or facebook. I have ADD so it’s sometimes difficult to stay focused but when I start, sometimes I don’t stop for hours. I like writing at home. I’m not one of those people who can go to a coffee shop or the library and write.
3) Awaken is described as a YA Dystopian with a good amount of SciFi included. Were you drawn more to those genres when you began writing, or did it turn out that way as you worked more on that novel?
I liked the genre because I could create a new world/society but still have humans and some of what we consider normal life. I could be creative without having to worry about fabricating creatures or folklore. It was difficult however to write and not be able to make pop culture references or use certain words like hell or god since religion doesn’t exist in my future society. It’s funny how many exclamations are tied to religion. I couldn’t say ‘holy shit’ or ‘oh god’ or ‘go to hell’. I do love the idea of inventing new technology and dreaming about what the world might become.
4) You’ve also said that you’re a big fan of anything Supernatural. Can we expect any novels in the near future that include supernatural elements?
Absolutely! My second novel is about Norse mythology and includes supernatural elements. It’s called Midnight Wolf and it follows the Midnight brothers on their investigation of supernatural murders. They are casters and have magical abilities. I’m very excited for that novel 🙂 Look for it Spring of 2018.
5) Awaken was your first writing endeavor, which is a soon-to-be new release (Congrats!). Is there any advice you would like to share with other fellow writers who are working on their first novel, or thinking of starting one?
Do it! Writing is not easy and there are many times that we feel like giving up but I’m so proud of my novel. It’s hard work but the payoff is incredible. The idea of people reading my book and enjoying it is more than I could ever ask for. One piece of advice I would give is to read a lot and practice. If you’re scared because you don’t know if your writing is good, practice on fanfiction. The following I have on my fanfiction encouraged me to finish my novel. The positive feedback on my stories kept me motivated and I got to practice a lot. My writing from 3 years ago is so different from my current style but that’s the point, to keep evolving and improving. I’ve taken on quite an endeavor since Awaken will be a trilogy. The second book is called Incite and the third is called Decimate.
Georgina Kane — I graduated from St. Cloud State University with a BA in English Writing and Literature. I’ve been writing since childhood but I’ve recently started writing full length novels and short stories.
My first book is called Awaken – a YA scifi dystopian story of a 16 year old boy who finds out the secret his society has been keeping for hundreds of years.
I’m currently working on my second novel, Midnight Wolf – a YA supernatural thriller that follows three caster brothers who are sent to a high school to investigate supernatural attacks.
