Goodreads Synopsis: Here and Gone is a gripping, wonderfully tense suspense thriller about a mother’s desperate fight to recover her stolen children from corrupt authorities.. It begins with a woman fleeing through Arizona with her kids in tow, trying to escape an abusive marriage. When she’s pulled over by an unsettling local sheriff, things soon go awry and she is taken into custody. Only when she gets to the station, her kids are gone. And then the cops start saying they never saw any kids with her, that if they’re gone than she must have done something with them… Meanwhile, halfway across the country a man hears the frenzied news reports about the missing kids, which are eerily similar to events in his own past. As the clock ticks down on the search for the lost children, he too is drawn into the desperate fight for their return.
I didn’t know exactly what to expect with this read when I received it and that’s a good thing. I knew I would be taking on some twist and turns, but wasn’t aware just how much. It’s a scary thing having to leave a volatile environment just to end up having to deal with something much more scarier and unnerving. Even scarier, is the fact that those which caused more harm to her and fear were crooked officials.
“Audra approached the bars, put her hands on them. She looked Whiteside in the eye, inches away, on the other side. ‘Please,’ she said, unable to keep the quiver from her voice. ‘I’ve done everything you said. I’ve been cooperative. Please tell me where my children are.’ Whiteside held her gaze. ‘What children?’ he asked.”
Here’s a character that gets herself away from a very abusive relationship, has done her best to stay clean and strong for her children in the past two years, just to end up not having them by her side when she is so close to a new beginning. That is the biggest fear and heartbreak no mother should ever have to go through, especially when it is due to those who are meant to protect.
That’s where the story really begins and everything is turned on her even more. I wanted to somehow help her, you could imagine how much she was struggling to stay strong, to keep fighting and moving forward because of her children. It was an intense read and many times made my blood boil, I read even faster through to find out what was going to happen, hoping for a miracle every moment. Being introduced to Danny did just that, he added more depth to Here and Gone and gave me a stronger reason to keep reading.
“The sheriff stood, lifted his hat from the table. Danny spoke as he stepped away. ‘I know what you did,’ he said. Whiteside stopped and turned. ‘What was that?’ ‘You heard me.’ Whiteside wrapped his thick fingers around Danny’s arm. ‘I think you and me ought to go outside and talk a little more.’ Danny smiled at him. ‘No, I think I’ll stay right here and finish my lunch.'”
It was hard for me to read in some parts and more painful in others. I was very pleased with how much carried in this book and couldn’t wait to finish and find out exactly what was going to happen with Audra and her family. I wished the same closure for Danny’s character and loved that it showed someone willing to help another even if it meant all was probably lost for him. This novel was definitely a thriller and full of suspense.
